Dear Mr. Joe Carter:
The Phils are going to turn the corner this season, Joe. The very first day of spring ball, Scott Rolen and Bobby Abreu went over the fence back-to-back, and while you might not have been listening to the game like I was, I think you felt it. In your retired bones, you had to feel it. That the crowning achievement of your career, the destruction you wrested, might soon be undone. That the slider you hooked inside the foul pole for Toronto back in '93 is, like all things, ripe to be forgotten. That the Philadelphia Phillies are turning the corner.

went to a ballpark recently. I forget what the score was, but what I do
remember is that there will be a Prada Uniform Shirt Day in a couple of
weeks, that Linda Ronstadt recorded "Hasten Down the Wind" in 1976, and
that it's all right to drink gallons of Budweiser provided it doesn't
make you drunk. I gleaned this information-and much more-from the
park's Octophonic Dolby Sound, Emerald Vision Scoreboard, and Lower
Deck Goodyear Blimp.

t was just before the All-Star break back in '88, when my friend Billy called with free tickets for the Dodgers game, compliments of Ozzie Smith, the St. Louis Cardinals all-star shortstop and future Hall of Famer. St. Louis was in town for a three-game series and Billy worked with Ozzie's brother at one of those weekly advertisement papers.
Billy and I were at the Will Call window by 6:20 that evening for the 7:30 game. By 6:45, there was still no sign of Ozzie Smith's brother.
